Tail in Silver Light

A grazing horse is held in near-silhouette against a luminous field, framed by dark fencing and overhanging foliage. The composition is constructed so that visual attention is drawn first toward the horse’s sweeping tail: its fine strands and lateral movement break away from the otherwise still, weighty form of the animal. From there, the eye moves back through the body, fence lines and softly rendered landscape. High-contrast monochrome, grain and an imperfect photographic edge give the scene the character of an aged silver-gelatin print, while the tail introduces a brief sense of motion into an otherwise quiet image.
